Clinically important: Streptococcus bovis

Characteristics/Epidemiology

Normal faecal flora

Clinical significance

Occasionally causes:

Laboratory identification

alpha or gamma hemolytic.

Bile and esculin positive (like enterococcus)

PYR negative and cannot grow in 6.5% NaCl (unlike enterococcus)

Treatment

Sensitive to penicillin or other antibiotics.

Prevention/immunity

No vaccine.

No lasting immunity.
