Facultative intracelluar parasites
Causes trench fever - mild, relapsing fever with maculopapular rash
Reservoir - human
Vector - human body lice
Treatment: Azithromycin
Associated with most cases of cat-scratch disease
Small abscesses at site of cat scratch or bite
-> followed by fever and localised lymphadenopathy
Also causes bacillary angiomatosis in immunocompromised pts.
Treatment: Doxycycline plus rifampicin
Causes Oroya fever
-> Serious, infectious anaemia
Vector - sandfly. Primarily in South America
Treatment: Blood transfusion, azithromycin
